Skin exploration
From first to eighth grade, I struggled with a skin condition that spread across my body. The warts were visible and impossible to hide, accompanying me with feelings of insecurity, a desire to conceal, and a constant longing for smooth, clear skin. Years of treatments highlighted the tension between hiding and accepting, between shame and confidence.
This experience led me to rethink ideals of beauty and aesthetics. Instead of striving solely for cleanliness, uniformity, or the removal of “blemishes,” I began to find beauty in skin that is marked, textured, and different — skin that tells a story.Inspired by the work of Susan Collins, who transforms stains into gold-threaded textures, I learned to see value and narrative in what might first appear as “imperfection.” This interplay between the human desire to clean and erase, and the ability to recognize beauty within the mark itself, became a creative and emotional tool that challenges conventional boundaries of aesthetics
